Lightspill · Last updated October 5, 2026
Lightspill ("the app") is a menu-bar app for Mac that keeps your Mac awake, and optionally running with the lid closed. It does its work on your Mac and collects nothing about how you use it.
Information we collect
GDW Entertainment does not collect, transmit, or sell personal information through Lightspill. The app has no accounts, analytics, advertising, or tracking.
When Lightspill goes online
- License keys (Lemon Squeezy). When you enter a license key, and about once a week afterwards, Lightspill sends the key to Lemon Squeezy's license service to activate and confirm it. Along with it goes a random label for your Mac (for example "Lightspill 3f9a2c1d") so the activation can be told apart from your others. Nothing else about your Mac is sent. Lemon Squeezy replies with the name and email on the purchase, which Lightspill keeps on your Mac to show who it's licensed to. Removing the license from a Mac tells Lemon Squeezy to free that activation.
- Updates. Lightspill checks gdwentertainment.com about once a day for a newer version. Like any web request, this shares your IP address and the app's version with our web host.
Purchases
Purchases are processed by Lemon Squeezy, our reseller and merchant of record. They collect what is needed to take payment, send your receipt and license key, and handle sales tax, under their privacy policy. We can see the name, email address and country on an order, so we can help with your license or a refund; we never see your card details.
Data stored on your Mac
- Your settings (timer length, lid mode, battery cutoff and so on) are kept in the app's preferences.
- Your license key, its activation ID, the purchaser's name and email, and the date your free trial started are kept in your login Keychain.
- Lightspill's background helper keeps one small file,
/Library/Application Support/Lightspill/held.json, recording your Mac's sleep setting from before lid mode changed it, so it can always be put back.
Permissions
Lid mode needs a background helper that changes one power setting (pmset disablesleep). macOS asks you to approve it in System Settings → General → Login Items. Lightspill asks for no other permissions.
Children
Lightspill is a general utility and is not directed to children under 13.
